Hand-painted "map of old Beijing and customs"
www.chinanews.cn 2005-08-29 16:07:31
Readers were looking at the "map of old Beijing and customs" at the
Xinhua Book Store in Beijing's Wangfujing, on Aug. 28. This "map of old
Beijing and customs" was painted by a foreigner in 1936. What's special
is that the character identifiers of all geographical locations in the
map were accompanied by pictures featuring folk customs. When
republishing the map, the Xueyuan Publishing House maintained the
original appearance of the map but provided Chinese translation to the
English names of places on the map.
