Per capita GDP tops $1,000 in Tibet

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-31 12:45:35

(Source: Xinhua)

LHASA, Jan. 31 - The per capita gross domestic product (GDP) topped 1,000
U.S. dollars in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region last year, at
least 10 percent up over the 2004 figure, said a report released by the
regional legislature.
Tibet's GDP topped 25 billion yuan (3.1 billion U.S. dollars) in 2005,
more than double the year 2000 figure of 11.78 billion yuan (1.47 billion
U.S. dollars), said the report on Tibet's social and economic development
endorsed by the regional People's Congress at its annual session.
It said Tibet's annual GDP growth averaged 12 percent in the past five
years.
While traditional agricultural and animal husbandry industries continue
to play a leading role in the local economic development, the tertiary
sector has for the first time surpassed the primary industry to
contribute more than 50 percent to the local GDP growth, the report said.
It said Tibet will target a 12 percent annual GDP growth in the coming
five years.

Celebrations in Asia heat up on eve of Lunar New Year

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-29 14:33:28

(Source: Agencies)

Dragon sculpture was seen at a street in Thailand on Jan. 28, 2006. In
Thailand, where about 14 percent of the 64 million people are ethnic
Chinese, many ethnic Thais now enthusiastically joining in the
celebrations for Chinese Spring Festival, for which authorities were
closing the main street in Bangkok's Chinatown.

BEIJING, Jan 29 - Celebrations reached a peak on the eve of Lunar New
Year Saturday as families in China thronged to temple fairs and set off
firecrackers to ring in an auspicious Year of the Dog.
The Chinese diaspora in Asia and around the world was readying for the
biggest festival of the year, during which families reunite for lavish
feasts and believers burn offerings to honour gods and pay respect to
their ancestors.
In Beijing, fireworks -- which are traditionally believed to ward off
evil spirits and ghosts trying to enter the new year -- made a loud
return for the first time in 12 years as a ban was lifted from midnight
Friday.
Residents revelled in the return of a more colourful and noisy atmosphere
for the festival, and the loud bangs of firecrackers have been heard
non-stop throughout the city since late Friday.
The Chinese capital, home to 15 million people, has endured relatively
subdued Lunar New Year celebrations since a 1994 fireworks ban in nearly
200 cities, most of which have now reauthorised their use.
With safety still a major concern, Beijing authorities mobilised more
than 3,000 police officers to patrol downtown areas on Saturday night in
case of fires and accidents, the Beijing Morning Post reported.
The gradual return of traditional temple fairs has also delighted Beijing
families as they bring their children to watch lion dances, acrobatic and
other folk performances, and to patronise folk art and snack stalls.
Others burnt offerings at the temples -- once closed as symbols of feudal
superstition by the Communist regime -- to wish for a prosperous new year.
On the eve of Lunar New Year, Chinese families prepare a feast of
chicken, duck, pork and fish, along with sweets and fruit, and offer it
to their ancestors, deceased relatives and other spirits.
People also mark the holiday by giving oranges -- symbols of wealth --
and "lai see", or lucky money, in traditional red envelopes. Gold is also
a popular gift.
Dining out has also become fashionable across China's more prosperous
cities in recent years.
Last year, some 1.1 million Beijing residents splashed out on dinners on
new year's eve, bringing a total income of some 80 million yuan (10
million dollars) to the city's restaurants, Xinhua news agency said.
Chinese communities around the world were also marking the festival.
London was gearing up for the largest Chinese New Year celebrations
outside Asia, with organisers expecting more than 80,000 people to watch
an annual parade Sunday that culminates in Trafalgar Square.
In China's Taiwan region, the New Year unfolds in traditional Chinese
style with banquets, family reunions, games of Mahjong as well as
shopping and travel.
The climax is the colourful Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the Lunar
New Year period, with lantern exhibitions and fireworks across the island.
In South Korea, some 30 million people were expected to be on the road on
a traffic-snarled weekend to visit their home towns and sweep family
graves.
In Thailand, where about 14 percent of the 64 million people are ethnic
Chinese, many ethnic Thais now enthusiastically joining in the
celebrations, for which authorities were closing the main street in
Bangkok's Chinatown.

Chinese govt may ease curbs on oil price

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-26 11:30:06

(Source: Xinhua/Shenzhen Daily/Agencies)

The government is expected to relax controls over retail oil prices in
its domestic market, bringing them more into line with international
prices, but there is no timetable for the long-awaited reform, saying
only that it should occur step by step, Li Deshui, head of the National
Bureau of Statistics, told a media briefing in Beijing yesterday.

BEIJING, Jan. 26 - The government is expected to relax controls over
retail oil prices in its domestic market in the future, bringing them
more into line with international prices, a National Bureau of Statistics
official said.
Li Deshui, head of the National Bureau of Statistics, told a media
briefing in Beijing yesterday that he believes the government will allow
retail oil prices to rise in response to market forces in the near
future, despite the flow-on inflationary effect on the economy.
"We should make full play of the market mechanism to find the real
price," he said
"That's one of the reasons we should accelerate the reform of the price
mechanism."
The government has set caps on the prices of retail oil products in the
domestic market to deflect inflationary pressure and cushion consumers
from the full effects of soaring global energy prices.
Oil prices reached a four-month high of US$69.20 per barrel Monday in the
international market, far higher than the prices paid for the commodity
by domestic users.
Li gave no timetable for the long-awaited reform, saying only that it
should occur step by step.
He also said that China's net imports of crude and refined oil last year
dropped 5.3 percent year on year, and welcomed the downturn as a sign
that the country is using the resource more efficiently.
The country's rate of consumption of crude and refined oil last year was
also down 0.5 percent compared with a growth of 15.3 percent a year
earlier.
"With gross domestic product growth at 9.9 percent, the drop is very
encouraging. This means China's economy can maintain high growth with a
significant fall in natural resources consumption," Li said.

China to map the ancient Great Wall

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-03 16:24:46

Chinanews, Jan. 3 - The mysteries of the specific location, distribution,
layout, communication devices, construction process, etc. of the Great
Wall during the rule of Emperor Qin (259BC-210BC) will soon be unveiled
to Great Wall scholars and archeologists.
According to the Beijing Times, the China Great Wall Society revealed
recently that China will commence an on-the-spot investigation of the
entire Great Wall during Emperor Qin's rule this April. After the
investigation, Chinese scientists will map the complete layout of the
Great Wall during Emperor Qin's rule. This will be also included in the
map of China.
This investigative effort will start from Gansu Province's Min County
(Lin Tao in old times), the western end of the Great Wall, wind through
18 cities and 46 counties in Gansu Province, Ningxia Hui Autonomous
Region, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Shaanxi Province, Hebei
Province, and Liaoning Province to reach the eastern end of the Great
Wall (Liao Dong in old times). This project will fill a blank in the
Great Wall studies, smoothly connect the history of Qin (248BC-207BC) and
Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD), and facilitate in-depth studies of these two
dynasties.
The China Great Wall Society's vice secretary general Zhang Ji said that
after subjugating and uniting China, ending the Warring States era
(475BC-221BC), Emperor Qin connected and extended old fortification walls
of those former states such as Zhao and Yan with its own, extending the
wall from Lintao in the west to Liaodong in the east, thus forming the
first 10,000-Li (5,000km) Great Wall in China's history. Owing to natural
and human factors, however, Emperor Qin's Great Wall was nearing
collapse. At present, scientists can only deduce the approximate
location, distribution and layout of the Emperor Qin's Great Wall from
historical records.

Foreign security experts to protect Beijing Olympics

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-29 13:45:19

Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 29 (By Yu Lixiao) - Beijing police will hire
more than 50 security experts from within and outside of China as
security advisers during the Beijing Olympics. This is Beijing's public
security bureau and Olympic security co-coordinating committee's
revelation to the media during their Dec. 28th press conference.
According to Beijing Public Security Bureau deputy chief Yu Hongyuan, the
police will divide Olympic venues into four grades, depending on the
degree of attention. Those competitive events that are most watched and
where as least 60% of the seats are filled, policemen in uniform and in
civilian clothes will patrol to keep peace and prevent the occurrence of
unexpected events. Volunteers and Olympic security detail will primarily
maintain the security of events where fewer than 50% of the seats are
filled.
It was learned that Beijing police have set up security plans for all 55
Olympic stadiums in accordance with their designs and have built first
grade and highly sophisticated monitoring device as well as alarms at the
same time these stadiums were built. It was also learned that during next
year's major sport events, all procedures will follow Olympic security
details so that drilling and testing can follow real events for further
improvement. Those that do not meet standards will be adjusted,
supplemented and changed.

A Shoushan stone carved "roasted duck" priced at 280,000 yuan (US$34,500)
was put on the counter for sale at Qilu Jewelry, an influential mainland
jewelry producer, in Shandong's Jinan on Dec. 26. This "roasted duck" was
so exquisitely made and lifelike in shape and color that an elderly lady
could hardly believe this is not a real roasted duck until she sniffed if
it smells. According to Qilu Jewelry, this Shoushan stone "roasted duck"
is the only one in China. It was exquisitely designed and produced by a
master sculptor on the basis of the shape and color of a Shoushan stone
and took several years to complete.

Tariffs to be cut on 100 categories of imports

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-14 09:18:03

(Source: Xinhuanet)

BEIJING, Dec. 14 - China said Tuesday it will further cut import tariffs
on more than 100 categories of products beginning Jan. 1, 2006, involving
vegetable oil, raw chemical materials, automobiles and parts.
Approved by the State Council, or China's cabinet, the move was taken to
honor China's tariff reduction commitment upon its entry into the World
Trade Organization, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council
said in a statement.
Since China has fulfilled most of its tariff reduction obligations, the
latest plan will not have a big impact on China's overall tariff level,
according to the statement.
China's overall level of import tariffs will remain at 9.9 percent in
2006, compared with 10.4 percent in 2004.
The average import tariff will be 15.2 percent for farm produce and 9.0
percent for industrial goods, it said.
As of 2006, China will continue its tariff and quota management of wheat,
corn and five other farm produce items and three categories of chemical
fertilizers, and abolish tariffs and quota management of soybean oil,
palm oil and rapeseed oil.
China will also stop collecting export tariffs on textile goods, and
impose provisional tariff rates on over 60 categories of exports as of
Jan. 1, 2006, according to the statement.
China will impose more preferential import tariffs on products from the
10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as of
2006 according to the agreement on the China-ASEAN free trade area.
Similar preferential import tariffs will also be available for products
from Pakistan and Hong Kong and Macao according to related arrangements.
China will also impose even lower tariffs on products originating from
about 30 least developing countries, such as Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos,
Bangladesh and Sudan.
The 15 kinds of fresh fruit produced in Taiwan will continue to enjoy
zero tariff rates, said the statement.

Final imperial examination paper

Cultural and historical researcher Yu Changluan from Shandong's Wudi
County was displaying his collection of the final imperial examination
(presided over by the emperor) paper of famous Chinese epigraphist Wu
Shifen (1796-1856AD). In the front of the 260cm long and 44 cm wide paper
stamped the imperial seal of Emperor Daoguang (Aisin Giorro Minning) of
the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911AD) and at the end of the paper printed the
title and name of the official responsible for the printing of the paper.
The whole paper sees no damage and is intact. Moreover, the beautiful
handwriting, rapier thrust and discerning discussion may fairly earn this
article the title of a classic.

China to complete IPR strategy next year

www.chinanews.cn 2005-11-28 13:44:12

Chinanews, Nov. 28 - The State Intellectual Property Office deputy
director Zhang Qin revealed on November 25 that his office has been
taking the lead in the strategic work to set up the nation's intellectual
property and expects that work to be completed by the second half of next
year.
Zhang said that through the establishment and implementation of China's
intellectual property strategy, the country will have actual protection
of the important target of intellectual property and can help incubate a
batch of companies that own their own intellectual property and reduce
conflicts with foreigners over this contentious issue.
It was learned that the concrete targets of the countrys intellectual
property strategy include: by the year 2020, a well rounded set of
intellectual property laws, regulations and policies, a working structure
of a relatively well-formed intellectual property system, large-scale
elevation of the market economys ability to innovate and to use
intellectual property system to take part in market competition,
especially the ability to compete in international markets, the basic
establishment of a platform to search and analyze intellectual property
information, the elevation of societys awareness of intellectual
property, cultivation of a group of high-quality intellectual property
individuals, strengthening of external co-operation and effectively
protect the countrys interests.

After centuries of evolvement, the ancestors of Yao ethnic group passed
down a traditional teaching used to educate their next generations in Yao
history, rules, etiquette and moral. Such teaching is called "Dujie."
"Dujie" is an indispensable sacred class for Yao males in Guangxi's

they are, they will be protected by deities and obtain social value only
after they have passed "Dujie."

Residents carried bottled water in Harbin's business area, the capital of
northeastern Heilongjiang province November 23, 2005. Harbin, one of
China's biggest cities, on Wednesday temporarily restored water supplies
shut off at midnight to allow residents to stock up as a wave of polluted
river water flowed towards the area. China confirmed earlier on Wednesday
that an explosion at a petrochemical plant had caused 'major pollution'
of the Songhua River, from which Harbin draws its drinking water.
