High blood pressure kills 1 Chinese each 15 seconds

Chinanews, Beijing, Oct. 8 (By Zeng Liming) - Today is the "National
Hypertension Day." Statistics released by the Ministry of Health show
that the number of hypertension patients in the Chinese mainland is
growing rapidly at present, reaching 160 million. In every 15 seconds,
one person dies of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease. However,
those that have recognized their high blood pressure constitute only
30.2% of the total hypertension patients and only 6.1% of such patients
have effectively controlled their disease. It has become an extremely
urgent affair to publicize knowledge of hypertension prevention and
treatment.
Results of the 2004 survey on Chinese residents' nutrition and health
also indicate that 18.8% of Chinese people aged 18 or above are suffering
from high blood pressure, rising 31% over 1991, with the number of
hypertension patients increasing about 70 million. By 1998,
cerebrovascular disease has become the No. 2 killer in urban areas and
the No. 1 in rural areas, causing more than 1 million death tolls every
year. Hypertension has maimed 75% of the 5 million patients to varying
extents, imposing heavy burdens on individuals, families and the society.
Hypertension has become a critical public health problem.
