China to map the ancient Great Wall
www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-03 16:24:46
Chinanews, Jan. 3 - The mysteries of the specific location, distribution,
layout, communication devices, construction process, etc. of the Great
Wall during the rule of Emperor Qin (259BC-210BC) will soon be unveiled
to Great Wall scholars and archeologists.
According to the Beijing Times, the China Great Wall Society revealed
recently that China will commence an on-the-spot investigation of the
entire Great Wall during Emperor Qin's rule this April. After the
investigation, Chinese scientists will map the complete layout of the
Great Wall during Emperor Qin's rule. This will be also included in the
map of China.
This investigative effort will start from Gansu Province's Min County
(Lin Tao in old times), the western end of the Great Wall, wind through
18 cities and 46 counties in Gansu Province, Ningxia Hui Autonomous
Region, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Shaanxi Province, Hebei
Province, and Liaoning Province to reach the eastern end of the Great
Wall (Liao Dong in old times). This project will fill a blank in the
Great Wall studies, smoothly connect the history of Qin (248BC-207BC) and
Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD), and facilitate in-depth studies of these two
dynasties.
The China Great Wall Society's vice secretary general Zhang Ji said that
after subjugating and uniting China, ending the Warring States era
(475BC-221BC), Emperor Qin connected and extended old fortification walls
of those former states such as Zhao and Yan with its own, extending the
wall from Lintao in the west to Liaodong in the east, thus forming the
first 10,000-Li (5,000km) Great Wall in China's history. Owing to natural
and human factors, however, Emperor Qin's Great Wall was nearing
collapse. At present, scientists can only deduce the approximate
location, distribution and layout of the Emperor Qin's Great Wall from
historical records.
