Yunnan's Qiaojia County, located in the Hengduan Mountain Range region,
is home to steep mountains and precipitous cliffs. Local residents have
been suffering from inconvenient transportation for many years and have
to carry goods on their back or on horses. Moreover, they run into much
difficulty contacting the outside world. In recent years, as the local
government has increased its investment in rural infrastructure
construction, roads to various villages have been completed one after
another, highly facilitating the life of rural residents.

China to invest $22.5b in oil refining sector

www.chinanews.cn 2006-03-26 15:53:09

(Source: Xinhua)

BEIJING, Mar. 26 - China plans to spend 180 billion yuan (22.5 billion
U.S. dollars) in the oil refining and petrochemical sector in the next
five years, an industry insider said here on Thursday.
Duan Wende, vice-president of PetroChina, said China aims to build five
10-million-ton oil refining bases, two aromatic hydrocarbon production
bases, four chemical fertilizer production bases and six large ethylene
production bases in the coming five years.
Meanwhile, a sales network will be set up to support these projects, he
added.
He said these measures are part of the country's efforts to realize the
goal of "orderly and high efficient" development of the oil refining and
petrochemical sector.
China plans to increase its oil refining capacity by over 45 million tons
to reach 170 million tons by the year 2010, an average growth rate of 5
percent.
The nation's chemical products output is expected to hit 20 million tons
by then, an increase of 12 million tons, according to the oil official.

Chinese government concerned about iron ore pricing talks

www.chinanews.cn 2006-03-22 15:49:35

Chinanews, Mar. 22 - China's National Development and Reform Commission
and Ministry of Commerce made simultaneous announcements on March 20th
that they are very concerned about talks conducted by Chinese enterprises
over long-term iron ore prices.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated in its official website, "At
present, China's steel industries is caught between the rock of rising
costs and the hard place of lower profits and is unable to bear the
repeated inflation of international iron ore prices".
It was learned that relevant departments in China are currently
considering regulations that would limit price ceilings for imported iron
ore. To avoid a price surge in long-term contracts, these departments are
presently negotiating contract terms with the world's major iron ore
suppliers. Administrative departments will not release import licenses
for iron ore ships containing contracts with prices above ceilings.
The Ministry of Commerce has earlier decided to slow down the pace of
granting import licenses and has implemented limits on the prices of iron
ore originating from Australia and Brazil.
Long term iron ore contracts all expire on April 1st. China's steel
companies have conducted three-month seesaw negotiations with
international suppliers. But major ore suppliers from Australia, Brazil
and India have one after the other indicated their ore prices will rise.
India's steel companies have appealed to their government not to supply
iron ore to China, based on the reason that India's internal steel demand
is robust.
