After 240 days of arduous work, Kang Zhanjie, a member with Hebei
paper-cutting special interest committee, completed a series of portraits
of beauties in ancient times, including Zhaojun in the Han Dynasty (206BC
to 220AD) and Xishi in the late Spring and Autumn Period (770BC to
476BC). Kang not only revitalized beauties from the Spring and Autumn
Period to the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911) in his works, but also integrated
beautiful sceneries of the four seasons in them.

On July 23rd, at the Stone Town segment of Nanjing's external Qinhuai

delivered one after another. The first water sightseeing route on
external Qinhuai River will begin trial operation in August. At that
time, tourists will board the boats at Sancha River and make a tour to
Wuding Gate over ten kilometers away. The route enables tourists to
appreciate beautiful scenes such as the TV tower, Stone Town, Ming
Dynasty (1368-1644) city wall, etc. At a general speed, the boats will
spend about one hour to finish the entire route. "Sounds of paddling and
shadows of lanterns" will, for the first time, appear at the external
Qinhuai River.

Most small and medium SOE restructured

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-13 14:46:30

Chinanews, Beijing, July 13 (By Yu Jingbo) - At the China Reform Forum in
Beijing on July 12th, Li Rongrong, director of the State-owned Assets
Supervision and Administration Commission, said that over 85% of China's
small and medium-sized state-owned enterprises (SOEs) completed
restructuring. China will try to crack the hard nut of eliminating all
remaining distressed large and medium-sized SOEs by 2008.
Li said that in the past two years, China's large SOEs had been
accelerating their paces in shareholding reform. Over half key SOEs have
finished shareholding reforms and diversified investment sources. More
than 85% of small and medium-sized SOEs have completed restructuring.
Some distressed enterprises left over from the past have stepped down
from the market by means of government bailout bankruptcy.
Li added that there were two general objectives for China's reforms of
state-owned assets management system and SOEs. One is to establish the
basic framework of a new state-owned assets supervision and
administration mechanism in three years beginning in 2004 to improve the
capacity of supervision and management. The other is to finish strategic
adjustment and reorganization by the end of 2010.

China starts survey on soil erosion

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-03 16:45:07

(Source: CRIENGLISH.com)

July 3 - China starts a national survey on soil erosion and ecological
security in many parts of the country.
The eight survey teams composed of experts and scholars shall travel
throughout the country for a yearlong comprehensive study.
During the survey's kick-off ceremony on Sunday, China's Water Resources
Minister Wang Shucheng said it shall cover issues of soil erosion and its
causes, ecological security, and current conditions.
The minister hopes that with first-hand data, experts can propose
protection strategies to preserve soil.
In recent years, China has stepped up its efforts in prevention of soil
erosion.
The central and local governments have invested nearly 36 billion yuan,
or 4.3 billion US dollars in the soil preservation since 1998, covering
almost 120 thousand square kilometers nationwide.

Trade surplus predicted to fall this year

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-27 09:43:39

(Source: China Daily)

GUANGZHOU, Apr.27 - Despite a 40 per cent growth in China's trade surplus
in the first quarter, it is expected to fall overall this year on the
back of changes in export policy and rising domestic investment, a
leading expert said yesterday.
"There is little probability that the trade surplus this year will exceed
the 2005 level," said Li Yushi, vice-president of the Research Institute
of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation under the Ministry of Commerce.
Li was speaking at the publication of the spring edition of the report on
China's foreign trade at the Chinese Export Commodity Fair held in
Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong Province.
"If no major changes occur on international markets, China will likely
limit its trade surplus to within US$50 billion this year," Li predicted.
Last year, China's foreign trade amounted to US$1,422 billion, with a
surplus of US$101.88 billion. The surplus was US$69.8 billion more than
the previous year.
The continuous surplus growth stemmed from a global shift in
manufacturing, said Li. Processing in Asia for consumption in Europe and
North America made balanced international trade difficult to realize over
a short period.
Continued strong demand produced a surplus of US$23.3 billion in the
first quarter this year, up 41.4 per cent over the same period last year.
It also helped raise China's foreign exchange reserves to US$875.1
billion at the end of March, up US$56.2 billion from the end of last year.
However, customs data showed export growth slowed with a rapid increase
in imports between January and March.
Liu Haiquan, a senior official with the Ministry of Commerce, said China
exported US$197.3 billion worth of goods in the first quarter, up 26.6
per cent year-on-year, but 8.3 percentage points slower than the previous
growth rate.
Meanwhile, the country imported US$174 billion worth of goods, up 24.8
per cent, an acceleration of 12.6 percentage points in the growth rate.
"The figures indicate that the government has taken measures to address
the trade surplus," Liu said.
The measures included slashing or scrapping tax refunds for some export
commodities and levying export duties on others.
"At the same time the government has encouraged imports," Liu said,
citing the orders worth US$16.2 billion made this month in the United
States.
Customs sources said China imported US$93.73 billion worth of machines
and electronics and US$53.37 billion worth of new and high-tech products
in the first quarter.
The China foreign trade report (spring edition) forecasts that foreign
trade will reach US$1,600 billion this year, up 15 per cent on last year.

China seeks diversified oil supply

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-25 14:30:19

Chinanews, Apr.25 - Chinese President Hu Jintao's state visits to Saudi
Arabia, Morocco, Nigeria and Kenya were called by some experts "trips of
energy diplomacy". It is learned that these four countries have abundant
energy reserves which can guarantee several decades of exploitation.
China is actively working on the strategy of finding diversified oil
supply which will be helpful for China's energy security.
"China's cooperation with Saudi Arabia is a win-win process. China is
seeking diversification of crude oil imports, namely diversification of
energy types, channels and conversion technologies. At the same time,
Saudi Arabia also expects to expand its crude oil export channels,"
indicated Han Xiaoping, CEO of www.china5e.com.
Saudi Arabia is renowned as the "oil kingdom" with abundant oil and
natural gas resources. It is the world's biggest oil producer and
exporter. Its most important crude oil export destination -- the United
States -- lately declared that it would reduce dependence on Saudi
Arabian crude oil, which means that Saudi Arabia would surely hope to
widen its oil export channels when it takes into account its own strategy
and economy.
Experts said that energy cooperation agreements reached by the two
governments, including the cooperation between the state-owned Saudi
Arabian Oil Company and a Chinese enterprise and the large-scale oil
refining and ethylene project in China's Fujian Province, are just
certain declarations of intent between both governments. Ultimately,
fulfillment of these agreements relies on businesses involved in the
industry.
However, the energy cooperation between China and Saudi Arabia involves
far more than the interests of these two countries. President Hu's visit
aiming to develop international energy cooperation will not only solve
China's energy problems, but in a sense also help relieve the pressure on
the world. China is the world's big factory, and to a certain extent its
energy consumption is not merely for its own sake.

Chinese enterprises suffer from lack of their own brands

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-20 18:19:09

Chinanews, Apr.20 - A toy, a shirt or a small household appliance bought
overseas is probably found "Made in China", while Chinese enterprises can
only earn a small amount of processing fee from manufacturing these
products labeled brands of multinationals or foreign companies. Such a
growth pattern of foreign trade, which is under the control of others,
has become a painful lesson that many Chinese export enterprises have
learnt as they do not have their own brands.
The Chinese Export Commodities Fair is China's biggest foreign trade
fair. In every exhibition hall, various commodities have shown the power
of Chinese enterprises, but actually very few enterprises' export
products are of independent brands and have the power to make a voice in
pricing.
China has become the biggest toy producer in the world, but at the
Chinese Export Commodities Fair, it is hard to find independent Chinese
brands recognized by overseas merchants. The retail price of a Barbie
doll may reach US$9.9 in the US, but in the Pearl River Delta, the
biggest producing area of Barbie dolls, Chinese enterprises can only get
US$0.35 of processing fee from manufacturing a Barbie doll. The brand
owner obtains most profit.
Most Chinese export enterprises manufacture products of foreign brands,
and their production falls in the link of low added value and low
technological content, such as processing and assembly. Chinese
enterprises have very few independent export brands. How to shake off
this embarrassing situation and seek more power to make their own voice
heard in the international market is becoming the direction of more and
more Chinese export enterprises' development.
